“I just didn’t think it was correct,” a local resident (who chose to remain anonymous) explained in regards to when California deemed gun shops as nonessential, thus forcing them to close.
“The government can’t just pick and choose to its politics, what is essential. I think there are certain things in our amendments that we know are sort of these inalienable rights..Ultimately people are always, in the state of fear and panic, willing to give up their freedoms for their security to abate their fears. And the saying goes you know, people's freedoms don’t end where your fears start.”

I met Ray in Coachlight Cafe, a burgundy red covered diner in downtown Valentine. Ray came in from Colorado but shares land up in Valentine with his siblings. He was back in town to tend to it with his nephew.
He spoke about respecting history; about acknowledging the fact that his land was once taken away from the Pawnee Tribes who lived there. Because of that he said, “I have to take care of the land and respect it.”

Janeice and her sister own the Chow Hound, a brick covered diner in Green River, Utah with a killer croissant sandwich.
She has strong eyes that make you nervous. At first she was a bit skeptical to talk about the town. But that made her smart with her words and concise.
“We’re only about 900 here so if someone gets it, we all get it.” Apparently there was one lady who had COVID but the way Janeice spoke about her was like she hid herself away to spare the gossip. “Nobody has seen her in awhile and she's made sure of it, if you know what I mean."
“The town normally gets a lot of tourists. Like bus-fulls. A lot of Asian tourists. But it’s been real quiet. So it’s been different. It’s been a lot slower.”

Suzie is the sweetest. When she smiles she has a youthful innocence. You could tell in her heart she never grew up.
She works at Young’s Western Wear in Valentine, Nebraska. A town of about 2,800 and located in Cherry County which proudly holds the most cows in the nation.
Although she wasn’t wearing a mask when I saw her, COVID was a concern for Suzie. “There’s been about 38 cases. Struck bad at the retirement home….I’m the only one who wears a mask around here.” She was worried her husband would get sick because of his age.

Ghanem works at the luxurious Wynn hotel in Vegas. Originally from Lebanon, he told us that his first and last names are the same. We didn’t believe him until he showed us his badge. Sure enough there it was in bold, “Ghanem Ghanem”.
When he found out we were from California he asked, “How come all the people from California give us a hard time with masks?”
